iPhone Fanatics Rejoice!

The iPhone will be release today at 6:00pm ( eastern time US) with the tech geeks already waiting in-line at the Apple stores around the country. Some of these die hard iPhone fans started to wait on line last Monday and today the lines wrapped around the block with the news media covering this like a big event. There is actually a person who is selling his spot on the line for $5000 dollars!

The early reviews on the iPhone are mostly positive and the only negative points about the device is the high price ( $500 and $600 with a 2 year contract) and its only available from AT & T ( sorry Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint users).

Key iPhone waiting sites now depicted in mash-up maps like this one by ZDNet's Russell Shaw -- OK, so maybe you have the Apple iPhone mania so bad you are going to camp out in a mall or on the street next to an AT&T Wireless Store or Apple Store this Friday. Urban attractions guide Gridskipper is thinking of you, and your needs on Friday- not only to wait on line (as opposed [...]

Is the USB memory stick the next media for music?

globe101.gif Wednesday, 20 June 07 - 01:42 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Technology

Exodus: 30th anniversary edition on the USB memory stick

30 years after the release of Bob Marley's Exodus album, Island Records is re-releasing this classic album on several formats including the USB memory stick. This will be the first time that Island Records will be releasing a full album on the memory stick media. The advantage i see on this format is the space saving design and the media is less susceptible to surface scratch unlike the cd format. However, one can easily justify that purchasing a memory stick ( or any memory card) and downloading a selection of music is much cheaper than the retail product. Time will tell if consumers will accept this alternative format or stick with downloading their music to their mp3 players. This USB memory stick album is a limited edition and only 4000 drives will be produced.

Rome reborn in 3D...The ancient city alive inside the computer.

globe101.gif Thursday, 14 June 07 - 10:56 AM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Technology

"Friends Romans Countrymen"  lend me your eyes

Imagine, being able to explore the ancient city of Rome with realistic computer simulation of the buildings and environment. This project called "Rome Reborn 1.0" was a collaboration by an international team of archaeologists, architects and computer specialists from around the world that cost $2 million dollars and over 10 years of development. The main purpose of this program is to show a realistic visual presentation of the city during the height of its development.

The exciting feature of this simulation is the capability to explore minute details of the ancient city not just the big structures like buildings and the coliseum but the interior of these frameworks. The simulation of this city was base on Rome in A.D. 320 during Emperor's Constantine time. The international team of experts managed to re-create almost the whole city of Rome with thousands of buildings and the amazing 13 mile long wall.

The head of Virginia's Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities stated that they use the same computer program that architechs utilize to process and simulate the ancient city. For me, this project is significant not only for scientist, experts, students but for anyone who wants to explore the ancient city of Rome.

Unfortunately, internet users can only view photos and videos of the city from the website since a computer systems are not set-up to handle high capacity traffics. However, a talk with Linden Labs is in the works and hopefully they can bring this simulation to their "Second Life" virtual world ( that will be exciting). Hopefully, they will be able to do more projects like this one and i'm excited at the prospect of exploring other ancient cities from Europe and Asia.

Robots are the future......

globe101.gif Monday, 11 June 07 - 04:05 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Technology

I always have a fascination with robots ever since i was a young boy watching the cartoons "Transformers", Voltron, and Gigantor ( a classic), they simply signifies power and technology. Movies like Lost in Space, Terminator, I Robot, Short Circuit and the classic Star Wars trilogy made them more appealing to the young and old.

So when i saw a story on one of the cable news network regarding the "Bear" developed by VECNA Robotics, i became intrigue with this new model of robot design to evacuate wounded soldiers from a combat zone. The Battlefield Extraction and Retrieval Robot (BEAR), looks like the character in the movie Short Circuit with its humanoid face design and the tracked legs with multi-terrain capability.

The benefit of the Bear being used in a hostile envorment is the ability to absorbed gun fires unlike human soldiers. This robot will easily lift an injured soldier for safe transport to the home base without getting tired. I could easily see this technology being applied to search and rescue mission, security, medical care applications, and home applications...imagine programming the Bear to take out the garbage or clean the house ( oh joy!).

VECNA Robot Bear

So watch the video below for a computer simulation of a soldier being rescued by a cute robot called the "Bear".

New technology that gives parents peace of mind

globe101.gif Wednesday, 06 June 07 - 03:09 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Technology

A new service will be introduce this month that will be a god-send to a lot of parents with teen driver in their household.  Safeco corporation will be launching this GPS base service that will enable parents to track their their teen driver via a computer. The product will be officially launch on June 27th and the service will cost  $14.99 a month.

Once this service is activated, the speed and distance of the teen driver will be relayed to the parents via the, computer, mobile, or phone. Depending on the settings that the user provided, a message will be sent notifying if the driver exceeded the speed limit or distance. As far as privacy is concern, the customer is the only one that can access the driver's information so no big brother is watching your teen-ager.

I have a 17 year old daughter and she is just learning how to drive so this service will be perfect for me and my wife. I believed this GPS technology will teach teen-agers to be more responsible and careful since the parents will be notified if they over speed or drive in an area that is off-limits. It will also improved their driving skills since over speeding is one of the main problems for teen drivers.

Is the Verizon Fios the Holy Grail for internet users?

globe101.gif Tuesday, 29 May 07 - 02:00 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Technology

The Verizon Fios is a fiber optic internet/tv service that is available in certain region of the United States. A few years ago, i read about the benefits of the fiber optic technology and the major speed improvements and high definition picture quality that comes with it. So when, i found out that my town will be next in-line to have this service, i told my family and friends on the benefits of this technology.

Suprisingly, my sister-in-law called to have this service installed before me because she likes the internet/tv/phone service package deal with "free" installation. So the day of the installation, i stayed at her house since she was unable to get a day off from work. The installation time to run a fiber optic line from the pole to the side of the house, install a main box( ONT - Optical Network Terminal), cable lines, fios cable boxes, router, and testing lasted about 5 hours! The technician stated this is a typical installation time and sometimes it could be longer depending on each situation (residential location, signal, etc.).

The first thing i noticed with the Fios tv service is the amazing picture quality from both the digital channels and high-def programs. Especially, the high-definition channels are so stunning ( watching from a hi-def television), the color reproductions is so vivid and the sound is crystal clear. Compared to my cable service which is prone to picture pixelation and frozen images, the Fios fiber optic signal is simply superior.

The internet connection is also awesome running at 15 Mbps downloads and up to 2 Mbps uploads. I did several testing of how fast this technology is by downloading and uploading photos and videos and so far i am mightly impressed with the Fios fiber optic connection. Unlike the performance of cable which is time of day dependent, the fiber optic connection is dedicated so there is no degredation of the internet speed.

So i'm sold, the Fios fiber optic technology is simply superior and i will be getting the internet service soon ( oh internet heaven!).

Positive: amazing digital and hi-definition picture quality, super fast internet connection, price ( affordable)

Negative: Long installation ( took 5 hours)

have multiple computers and various needs such as media downloads and
the ability to access or share large files. $44.95 a month as part of
        a calling package, or $49.95 a month stand-alone.

     -  30 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream. Designed for communications-
intensive power users with significant bandwidth needs, such as
telecommuters or work-at-home households and avid online gamers.

Welcome to My First Blog Post!

By Dennis Landayan in Technology

Getting Started

Wow it took me a while to dive in to the blogging world using a stand alone blogging tool like TeraPad ( i'm currently using another company for video and text blogging which integrates with their suite of products...mostly for family events). After checking numerous blogging tools out there, i finally chose Terapad for its simplicity and flexibility.

My Blog

I've read a lot of blogs and found a lot of them interesting and very informative. The directioin i'm going for my blog page will vary from technology ( computers, gadgets, video games...you get the picture) to online business opportunity.

Technology

I have always been interested in the latest technology whether its the latest gadgets or the latest trend. Ever since my first computer which is the infamous " Commodore 64" (remember the tape drive...lol) and my first video game console the Atari 2600, i've always have this appetite to experience and use these technology tools.

Before there was the internet as we know it, i was already connected online using the service of Compuserve (remember them) running at a blazing speed of 300 baud (and you thought dial-up today was slow). Back then, the only source of information online was the bulletin boards provided by the company like Compuserve.

Today, the internet is an integral part of our "Digital Life" and an important tool to access information for personal, school and business. The latest trend right now is Web 2.0 for websites and video streaming technology for personal or business applications.

So in the coming days, weeks, and months, i will try to keep up to these technology trends and showcase them here to my blog.

update: Veteran technology firm Commodore has launched a new generation of high-end gaming computers at the Cebit trade fair in Germany. http://commodoregaming.com/pcshop/Home.aspx
