Tired of the "Ding-Dong" sound from your doorbell then check this out!

globe101.gif Thursday, 11 October 07 - 01:42 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

If you can't get enough gadgets into your home then add this to your list, the USB Doorbell available from Think Geek ( a cool website for gadget fans). The ability to customize your doorbell's sounds from your favorite music, movie theme songs, audio clips or any sound effects that you desire by just uploading the file via the usb port. The USB Doorbell can accomodate up to a 30 seconds sound clips ( wave or mp3 format) with three different volume settings so the unit is flexible enough for most homes.

I really like the idea of being able to customized my door bell sound like i have custom ring tones for my cell phone. So if i have a USB Doorbell installed at my house below are just some of my  favorite sound clips to replace that boring ding-dong sound.

TV Shows theme songs: Addam's Family, The Munsters, The Jeffersons, I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith Show

Movie theme songs: Star Wars, Superman, Spiderman, Twilight Zone, Halloween ( original), Jaws

Audio clips: voice of Hal from 2001 Space Odyssey, 300 ( Spartans!), Darth Vader's voice, Bugs Bunny ( What's up Doc?), Kit from Knight Rider

Other: Holiday songs, Birthday song, Anniversary songs, Popular songs

As you can see by the sample list above, you are only limited by your imagination to the plethora of songs and sound clips available out there.

Important installation information from Think Geek:

Notes: The USB Doorbell is NOT a wireless doorbell. It is designed to be used in homes with pre-wired LOW VOLTAGE doorbell systems (which is the standard doorbell system). The USB Doorbell does not include a step down transformer, and is only designed to be used within a low voltage circuit (4-24 V). If you are unsure where your step down transformer is in relation to your current chime unit(s), do some research first! Occasionally they are attached to the chime itself, hence replacing your current chime may also remove the transformer. There are plenty of DIY websites out there that can help you figure out the details!

Check out the video below from Think Geek to see the USB Doorbell in action ( very funny...just watch it).

A neat gadget that everyone can use.....

globe101.gif Friday, 21 September 07 - 09:55 AM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

I was watching one of my favorite cable show lastnight, The Big Idea : Donny Deutssch, which is basically a program about regular people like you and me who made millions with their idea or inventions. The show itself is very entertaining and informative and Donny Deutsch ( the host) energetic personality and humor makes the one hour show go fast.

Anyway, one product that caught my attention is the "Smart Shopper" which is a device that uses voice recognition technology to help you with your grocery list or errands. The Smart Shopper's concept is simple enough, you tell the unit which item you want to add to your grocery list and it will record and organize your shopping list.

Once you completed your grocery list, just hit the print button and the unit will print out the list that you recorded. This is better than jotting your list on a piece of paper or memorizing the stuff that you needed since most of the time we forget the most important items.

I like the idea behind the Smart Shopper, its simple and easy to use for the whole family. Eventhough the price is a little steep, it will save you a lot of frustrations for those days that you forget to buy that important item(s) on your grocery list.

Clean is Happy....and its not your teeth

globe101.gif Wednesday, 29 August 07 - 10:36 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

Normaly when you see an advertising slogan such as "clean is happy", one will think its about soap, toothpaste, or mouth wash. I stumble upon a website that utilized flash animation to the most creative ways to promote their product. As soon as the webpage is loaded you will be greeted by smiling asses ( not faces) from different people then the smiling faces behind (he he he...no pun intended) those tush are revealed one by one. If you place your cursor to any of those people a sound effect will play and their facial expression will change. Try clicking any or all of the categories and a flash video presentation is activated which clearly explained the advantages of this unit.

The first time i saw this ad i can't help but laugh at the presentation but at the same time admired the layout and design of the webpage. The product is the Washlet toilet seat system from TOTO which is a remarkable unit that cleans, dries, and warm one's tush for those chilly mornings. The Washlet bidet is very popular in Japan and more and more Americans are discovering the use of this technology for their personal hygiene.

Watch out Apple TV here comes......

Archos TV Plus

With the recent release of the much hype Apple TV, DVR media players are becoming popular among computer users and home theatre aficionados. What makes the Apple Tv so appealing is the simplicity of the design but it lacks some features that a lot of the tech geeks look for such as "hdmi" output, 720p support, and larger capacity storage. The Archos TV PLus will be release in the 80GB, 250GB configuration and it will connect directly to their content store for movies and tv shows download. This device will also include a QWERTY remote control for media selections and internet browsing ( a big plus). The official release date and pricing will be announce by the company.

Features:

  • Stand alone DVR
  • High speed usb content
  • Wifi & ethernet connection
  • HDMI & RGB in/out
  • Playback on tv
  • 80GB & 250GB

Future proof your home theatre system with....

globe101.gif Monday, 18 June 07 - 03:25 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

HDMI switcher?

I posted a month ago how important the HDMI connection as a feature  when buying a brand new High-definition television. Most of these so called "low-end" models or "no-name brands" are price so low that a lot of first time buyers base their decision on price rather than quality and features. In addition, most electronic items such as upconverting dvd players, HD-DVD, Blue Ray, and next generation video game consoles needs the HDMI input for high definition  display.

The HDMI switcher is a perfect addition to any home theatre set-up to accomodate the growing list of gadgets that utilize this technology. Even if you purchased the very latest high-definition television with 1 or 2 inputs, chances are you will need more to connect future devices. The best way to determine which switcher is the right model for the home theatre set-up is to always pick 2 or more inputs that you need for your system. So if you have 2 device that needs the HDMI input then purchase a 4 port switcher to accomodate future gadgets. Depending on your budget, there are models that are auto-switcher ( no need to switch manually) or manual switcher to select via remote-control or control panel.

Below are a few selections of HDMI switchers from various manufacturers.

Attention couch potatoes...your prayer has been answered!

Asahi Beer Bot

Picture this, its Sunday afternoon and you're watching a football game ( any sports game) and your team is behind but they are inching their way to tie the game but you are thirsty and the last beer on the table is empty...so what should you do?

a. quickly run to the kitchen and get a beer...but taking a chance to miss a great play

b. ask your wife or girlfriend ( depending on her mood...notttt!)

c. command asahi to pour you a nice cold beer

Well Asahi the beer bot will pour you all the beer you want with just a push of a button. This R2D2 like robot is capable of storing and cooling a six-pack then opens and pour the beer for you....just like a bartender. A Japanese company originally made 5000 as a promotional give-away and now they can be found on the internet for sale ( check link below). The Asahi beer bot is the ultimate gadget for your entertainment room, family room, and bar or just about anywhere you need a beer opening robot (every guy should have one of these...he he).

Since this is design for the Japanese market, the robot is capable of opening cans at their standard size of 350ml. The company supposably tested this robot with American size cans of 355ml...no guarantee if it will work with all foreign cans. I'm not a heavy beer drinker but i would love to have one of this robot for the ultimate gadget around the house ( great conversation piece). I think it will be perfect for opening sodas also for those who are non beer drinkers.

New man's best friend....especially during game day...he he.

Features:
• Stores and refrigerates 6 cans
• Opens cans and pours a perfect glass
• Ensures perfect temperature with internal sensor
• Programmable voice (male, female, or custom)
• Cleaning mode
• Child lock

Don't want an Ipod....Say hello to my little friend...iAudio 7

globe101.gif Thursday, 14 June 07 - 02:18 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

Sleek...Sexy...Black...Small...iPod killer???

Cowon iAudio 7

If you're not an ipod fan ( or Apple period) and looking for an alternative mp3 player, there are so many models out there with similar capabilites and price range. The problem with a lot of these players is that they are trying to imitate the ipod features rather than improve or differentiate their units. Cowon, a company from South Korea have been producing mp3 players for years and most of their models are beautifully design and features a lot of options that the ipod currently lacks.

One model that will be release next month in Korea is the Cowon iAudio 7 which is an upgrade from the iAudi 6. The main difference is the version 7 will be using the flash drive technology instead of the micro hard drive (  0.85-inch disk drive ) system from its predecessor. For the audio side, what makes this player appealing is the support for the FLAC and OGG format with the standard WMA/WAV/MP3 capability. This model is also capable of playing XviD encoded videos ( take that ipod) on the beautiful 1.3 inch LCD screen and with a battery life of 60 hours ( wow!) it simply blows most mp3 players away. The iAudio 7 will be available in two configuration, 4GB for $182 and 8 GB for $246, the release date for this unit will be July 18th in Korea.

note: The Cowon iAudio 7 will be release in Korea on July 18th.

Tech Shop Tip of the Day

globe101.gif Saturday, 09 June 07 - 12:55 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

Don't buy a GPS unit until you read this!

The last 12 months there have been a surge in sales of portable GPS ( Global Positioning System) products. Eventhough, most automobile manufacturers offer the GPS option on their high-end models, most consumers prefer the external device because of the portability advantage.

The word "portability" is the keyword here, unlike the built-in GPS system in the automobile, the external models will enable users to use it for multiple vehicles (not stuck to one car like the built-in). Another advantage is the ability to take the device with you on vacations and actually walking around with it for directions and point of interest locations ( like a virtual map).

Another major reason the surge in popularity of the GPS device is the price reductions of the entry level models. I was just checking my local paper and a lot of the ads from the big boxe stores are featuring units under the $300 range and even some under $200( stay away)!. Now, don't get me wrong, the price on these entry models are attractive but if you want the full experience of a GPS device, get the one with a "text-to-speech" capability. This feature will give a driver a turn by turn voice directions with the street names instead of distance calculations...for example, "turn right at main street" instead of "turn right at 500 feet". This is also a great safety feature since the driver will be focus more on the road instead of looking at the small screen of the GPS unit.

If you are planning on purchasing this product just make sure you read the specifications of the unit or ask the sales person if the device has the "text-to-speech" capability. Most GPS models with this capability are available between $400 to $800 depending on the extra features that are built-in like blue-tooth enabled, mp3 player, photo display, and real traffic information ( most of these features you don't need if you are looking just for the GPS navigation feature).

Christmas begins June 29th.....

globe101.gif Monday, 04 June 07 - 01:11 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Gadgets

June 29th - The release date of the IPhone!

The first time i saw the iPhone i was really impressed with the design and interface of the product. Steve Jobs really know how to create a device that looks sexy and hi-tech just like the first Ipod model. By the demo on the Apple commercial ( view video below), the operation of the IPhone seems intuitive enough so even a non-techie user can immediately navigate the many features of the product.

The only big drawback of the Iphone is the price $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model but this is not a regular phone, this is a "smart phone". Whether Apple can sell 10 million IPhones by the end of 2008, depends largely on the delivery of what they promise to be the integration of 3 amazing products in one device: a revolutionary mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls, and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching.

So what do you think of the Apple iPhone? Will you buy one or wait until the price does down or wait for the next version?

You get one of the most exciting off-road recreation vehicle for your feet, "The Wheelman"!  The first time i saw this video on You Tube i said to myself, "I want one!". Eventhough it looks like you can break a lot of bones riding this vehicle( my wife will not be a happy camper), the fun and wow factor alone is definitiely enticing.

Check the video below and see this amazing personal transportation in action. The ease of maneuverability and control of the Wheelman is the suprising aspect about this vehicle. The people on the video make it seems easy to ride and control probably due to the sideway stance and the placement of the feet inside the hubless wheel.

Engine:  41.5cc 2 Cycle Motor

Range (per tank of gas):  Up to 30 miles

Speed: 20 MPH (16km/h)

Inventor: Grant Taylor ( interview towards the end of video)
