A great Holiday bundle for the Xbox360 system!

globe101.gif Tuesday, 09 October 07 - 06:35 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

Xbox 360 with Two Free Games

With the amazing numbers that Halo 3 produced the last couple of weeks, Microsoft is providing gamers two more reasons to choose the Xbox 360 system with two new Holiday bundles ( available by the end of October 2007). The already reduced price of the Xbox 360 of $349 and $449 for the Xbox 360 Elite will be more enticing this Holiday season with two bundled games, Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. This is a great value for those who are thinking of buying the Xbox 360 game console and now you will get two free games that are top-notch. In addition, this is a perfect time to own an Xbox 360 with an impressive line up of games that are coming out soon such as Mass Effect, Project Gotham Racing 4, BioShock, Guitar Hero III, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

Kudos for Microsoft for including two great games for a console that is already selling extremely well because of its extensive library of games and the popularity of Xbox Live with its millions of members. With the price reductions and bundle announcements, Microsoft will continue to increase its marketshare this Holiday season and Halo 3 will continue to be the most popular title through the end of the year.

Halo 3 = $300 million in sales world wide!

globe101.gif Friday, 05 October 07 - 11:49 AM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

A history in the making in the video game industry, Halo 3 made more money in the first twenty four hours than any other block buster movies this year. I knew this game will be big but i did not expect it to sell that many copies in one day and making $300 million world wide in one week. Witht this amount of copies, i expect the Xbox 360 hardware sales to increase also during the same week. Bungie and Microsoft should be proud of themselves for making a video game that actually lives up to the hyped and then some. Check the sales figures below and remember this is for a video game not a blockbuster Hollywood movie.

 .

Pre-orders: 1.7 million copies

First day ( US): $170 millions in sales

First Week ( worldwide): $300 million in sales

Xbox Live: Over 1 millions players logged on to play halo 3 the first 20 hours!

More than 2.7 million gamers played on-line the first week.

Retailers: Over 10,000 hosted midnight madness events

Released: 37 countries and 17 langueages

Midnight Madness = Halo 3 ( We can all finish the fight at midnight!)

globe101.gif Monday, 24 September 07 - 02:47 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

The most anticipated game this year ( maybe in history!) will be finally release at midnight ( 12:01 to be exact) and fan boys across the country will be lining up at their local game store to purchase Halo 3. The media blitz for this game began a year ago from E3 and finally will explode tonight at 10,000 U.S. retailers and special events will be taking place at New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Miami.

I have been a video game player since the release of the Atari 2600 and played with all the game consoles ( owned most of them) and i've never seen this type of excitement over a video game. Infact, i was scanning my Sunday Newspaper yesterday and most of the ads from major retailers such as Bestbuy, Kmart, Circuit City, and Walmart have somekind of Halo 3 promotions. Even today, CNBC did a story on the release of this game and the impact on Microsoft's game division ( their stock went up) which has been in the red since the beginning. According to gamesindustry.biz, Microsoft already sold 1.5 million copies ( preorders) of Halo 3 in the U.S. surpassing the previous record from Halo 2 which is no small feat. The number of hardware sales of the Xbox 360 will also be significantly affected ( on the positive side) since most of the original Xbox owners are waitingfor this title. I can't wait to play this game and will surely enjoy it for many months to come.

Bungie studios have been working on Halo 3 for three years now and everyone is expecting this final chapter to be the best of the trilogy. The buzz on this game is so big that the preorders in North America alone have exceeded the one million mark. The Legendary Edition (Individually numbered and available while supplies last) is expected to be sold out by the time the game is release on September 25 and most retailers are predicting that Halo 3 will be the fastest selling game in video game history.

Microsoft Conference at E3

globe101.gif Thursday, 12 July 07 - 01:10 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

E3 2007 - Microsoft Conference

For a smaller and low key E3 this year ( watch the show on G4 TV), Microsoft made a big splash with their conference Tuesday night with a plethora of exclusive titles and new poducts. The evening started with the rock band Coporeal from Libertyville Illinois playing a music from Halo 3. Peter Moore ( Corporate vice president, interactive entertainment) stated that all the demos shown that night will be release this year and "It's the greatest lineup in video game history."  I totally agree, with all these titles being release later this year, the Xbox 360 is poise to dominate the hardware and software sales this holiday season.

Back to the show, once the Rock band logo appeared, Peter Moore started playing with a guitar along with three other people. I was suprised enough to see him playing but i didn't expect him to sing also ( go Peter!) which he did a good, especially for an executive. Anyway, there was a couple of mishap when he accidentally paused the game while playing causing the performance to halt for a few seconds ( unplanned comic relief). Rock Band looks like it will be a fun game and this is the type of title the Xbox 360 needed to capture the casual gaming market.

Peter Moore also did a presentation showing how the Xbox 360 third party games have cracked the top 10 list 18 times. He also stated that the Xbox 360 is outselling the PS3 two to one with the largest installed base of 5.2 million units in the U.S.

The rest of the show was mainly announcements of games and partnerships. Below are just some of the announcements from the Microsoft Conference.

Games

Halo 3 ( This game will break record in sales!)

Rock Band ( This will be a hit like Guitar Hero)

GTA 4 ( with exclusive episodic contents)

Mass Effect ( will be release in November)

Viva Pinata: Party Animals ( For kids)

ProJect Gotham Racing 4 ( now with bikes)

Call of Duty 4 ( awesome graphics!)

NBA Live 08

Madden NFL 08

Assassin's Creed ( can't wait...now for Xbox 360 also!)

Bio Shosck ( Great graphics!)

Naruto: Rise of the Ninja ( exclusive for the 360)

Lost Odyssey ( demo coming soon!)

Blue Dragon ( demo is available now at XBL)

Virtual Fighter 5 ( with on-line play)

Scene It ( with controllers included...by screenlife)

Resident Evil 5 ( a nice suprise...finally coming to the Xbox 360 in 2008!)

Gears of War ( for the PC)

Xbox Live

Here a few games coming to the XBL arcade: War World by Ubisoft, Bomberman Live!, Sonic the Hedgehog ( wow...one of my favorite!), Games, Golden Axe, Super Puzzle Fighter II HD Turbo Remix, Tetris Splash and many more.

XBL Video store: Disney movies will be available for download in High-def!

Hardware

Halo 3 Special Edition Console will feature Spartan green color with gold finish. Plus matching controller, 20 GB hard drive, head set, exclusive Halo 3 gamer pics and themes, play and charge kit with an HDMI connection. The Halo 3 special edition console will be release this September 2007.

Controller for the "Scene It" game ( Buzz style button on the top with smaller buttons below it).

What we did't get from the conference:

  • No IPTV announcements or demo.
  • No Xbox Live Vision Camera games announce.
  • No price drop announcement...unless they want to announce it close to the Halo 3 release date.
  • Nothing groundbreaking was revealed in terms of new projects or titles.

Overall, the Microsoft Conference was entertaining but lacks the energy from previous shows.

E3 2007 smaller and low key...

globe101.gif Monday, 09 July 07 - 05:31 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

 E3 Media & Business Summit 2007

E3 2007 is a few days away and this time it will be smaller without the large crowds from previous events. This time it will be by invitation-only so the event will be geared more to the business side of things instead of the mega productions ( no more booth babes?) from previous shows. The conference will be held at the Santa Monica, California from July 11 to 13 instead of the third week of May each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The big difference this year will be no central location for the show but instead the conferences will be spread among the several hotels in Santa Monica with the city's Barker Hanger will host most of the publisher's exhibits.

Eventhough, the public is not invited for this E3, i'm still excited to see what Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo will be announcing and showing as far as new games for their consoles. I hope Microsoft will show more of the single player Halo 3 with additional announcements of new features that was not revealed a few months ago. In addition, i'm eager to see more footage of games such as Mass Effect, Bio Shock, Too Human, Project Gotham 4, Assasin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV plus additional news on their upcoming IPTV service ( cross fyour fingers) and new features on the Xbox Live. As far as Sony is concern, i'm really interested to see an actual real-time game play of the much hyped Kill Zone 2 ( trailer was shown two years ago!) and Metal Gear Solid 4. For Nintendo, i hope they show more adult oriented games such as Resident Evil and Metroid Prime. Probably the most anticipated game for the PC is Spore and hopefully there will be some kind of appearance in terms of new trailers or new updates ( release date pleaseeeee!).

Is there a new chipset for the Xbox 360?

globe101.gif Monday, 09 July 07 - 02:54 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

According to Dean Takahasi's article in the San Jose Mercury News, Microsoft has a new chipset for the Xbox 360 code named, "Falcon". This new chipset will allow Microsoft to cut production costs and at the same time reduce the over heating problem that is currently plaguing some of the Xbox 360 concoles. The new chipset will be manufactured in the 65 nanometer production process which is a lot smaller than the current 90 nanometer design. The IBM microprocessor and AMD/ATI graphic chip will be part of the new design and will greatly boost Microsoft's production of the Xbox 360.

via: Dean Takahasi's article

update: Microsoft could announce a price drop for the Xbox 360 this week ( maybe at E3).

Price drop for the PS3 confirmed!

globe101.gif Monday, 09 July 07 - 01:38 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

Sony finally announced a $100 price drop of the PS3 to $499 effective immediately. The $599 price will be given to the 80 GB model with a Motorstorm bundle ( nice Sony) that will be available in the next few months. The price reduction is the right move for Sony since Nintendo and Microsoft are basically outselling it here in United States. However, this price point is still high for the majority of consumers but it will be competitive with the Xbox 360 Elite with no high definition dvd player. I expect Microsoft to announce a similar price drop for the Xbox360 to remain competitive with the Playstation 3.

The "Red Ring of Death" ...

globe101.gif Friday, 06 July 07 - 03:31 AM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

The Xbox 360 has a potential to be the most successful game console with its wide selections of games and state-of-the-art Live service. Additional contents such as game trailers, game demos, television programs and high definition movies sets the system apart from its competitiors. With 19 months of head start and over 11 million game console sold, Microsoft did a good job in marketing and supporting the system. However, one problem that plagued the system from the beginning is the "red ring of death" error that contributes to a high failure rate among Xbox 360 owners. To rectify this problem, Microsoft announced today via a press release and open letter formats that it will extend the warranties to 3 years from the date of purchase who suffers from the red ring of death error.

Peter Moore from Microsoft stated that they collected enough data from this problem to warrant the announcement and to address this issue. At least the Redmond company is taking responsibility for this technical problem by offering the extended warranty and reimbursing those who paid to get their system repaired related to the error message. Hopefully, Microsoft will also improve the internal design of the console to eliminate this glitch.

Rockstar to release a Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition...

globe101.gif Monday, 02 July 07 - 04:43 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

Rockstar will be releasing the second ( Halo 3 number one) most anticipated video game this year, Grand Theft Auto IV for both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Xbox fanboys will have a leg up on their Playstation counterparts with the addition of downloadable episodic contents especially created for the Microsoft system ( The Redmond company reportedly paid 50 million dollars for the exclusive contents...take that Sony!). Kudos to Microsoft for this move...exclusive games and contents will be the deciding factor who wins the next-gen war. The popularity of the Xbox Live and the available downloads such as games, high definition movies, television programs, trailers, and maps will put it ahead of the competition.

I'm hoping that the close release date of Halo 3 will not steal the thunder of Grand Theft Auto IV because both games deserves the spot light.

The  Special Edition will be presented in a customized metal safety deposit box.

The box will contain:

  • The Grand Theft Auto IV Art Book
  • Selected soundtrack CD from Grand Theft Auto IV
  • An exclusive Rockstar keychain for the safety deposit box keys
  • A limited edition Rockstar duffel
  • Retail Price: $89.99 ( North America)

Release date: October 16 in North America and October 19 in Europe

Its official "H3 Day" will be on September 25,2007

globe101.gif Thursday, 17 May 07 - 01:55 PM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

Halo 3 the biggest video game event of the year!

After months of speculation and rumor the date is finally set for the biggest launch in video game history!

The official date for this release is September 25,2007 then it will be release in Europe the next day. With the beta relase this week and this announcement, the Halo fanboys allover the world are rejoicing the confirmation of this event.

The Halo franchise is the most successful game for the Xbox system. Infact, the reason the Xbox system sold really well is because of this game and its on-line capability. When Halo 2 was released on November 4,2004, not only it generated quite a buzz but it made a one day sale of $125 million!

Now with the release of Halo 3, that sales figure could be eclipse because of the success of the Xbox 360. This system is the only next gen console with the most robust multi-player/online technology. Their system is capable of handling numerous players at one time and Microsoft just keeps improving their on-line service.

Halo 3 will be available in 3 editions

  • Standard game : $59.99,
  • Collectors edition : $69.99
  • Legendary edition complete with a helmet like the game’s main character, the Master Chief : $199.99.

Places where you can pre-order this game: Amazon.com, Bestbuy.com

The Beta is now release and the fanboys are in heaven!

globe101.gif Tuesday, 15 May 07 - 09:08 AM (GMT -05:00)
By Dennis Landayan in Video Games

The wait is finally over, the Halo 3 beta is release and thousands of lucky fanboys are savoring the gameplay of the most anticipated game of the year.

Halo 3 Beta 'Gameplay Modes' trailer

This juggernaut of a game will be release in several editions and one of them is called the "Legendary Edidtion". This awesome edition will come with a replica of the master chief's helmet ( sweeet!) with two bonus disc of contents ( includes cinematic, director's cut and commentary). The only down side of this incredible edition is the retail  price of $129 ( start saving fanboys!). I could already see this edition popping up on ebay for hundreds of dollars more.

The availability of the Legendary Edition will be on day one along with the other software. And if you can't get enough of this game, the Halo Zune is also in the works! This is a collaboration between the Zune team and Bungie studio. The look and feel of the unit will be Halo like and it will also come with contents from Bungie.
