Mayweather won the fight but have to settle with a split decision over Oscar De La Hoya.

Two of the best fighter in the world fought tonight that was supposed to be the fight of the year instead it was 12 rounds of see-saw battle. Mayweather was favored to win the fight because of his fast hands and excellent defensive skills. De La Hoya was a 3-2 under dog before the fight since he was facing boxing's pound for pound best fighter in his division.

In the end, neither boxer really dominated the fight since both are suprisingly respectful of each other's boxing skills. I was really suprised that De La Hoya did not apply his excellent jabs and body attack but instead almost thinking too much of how he's going to neutralize Mayweather's speed. However, he was successful in a few rounds in delivering a flurry of punches to Mayweather but unable to really hurt him.

Mayweather stated before the fight that his opponent will fade and get tired in the later rounds ( Oscar has a history of fading in the championship rounds) which he seemed as though he lost a lot of energy at the end. Eventhough, De La Hoya was successful with his jabs in the early rounds he just abondoned that strategy and Mayweather was able to connect a lot of his punches.

So it was not an action fight that everyone was hoping for but instead we got to see two of the best boxer in their division putting up a good show.

Here's the breakdown of the score:

  116-112 by judge Chuck Giampa

  115-113 by judge Jerry Roth

115-113 by Judge Tom Kaczmarek for De La Hoya

Here's the punch stats for the fight:

207 of 481 punches landed for Mayweather

122 of 587 punches landed for De La Hoya

   138-82 power punches for Mayweather

Fight of The Year or Hype of The Year?

Delahoya vs Mayweather

I know...i know...my blog page is suppose to be dealing with technology, gadgets, computers, the internet but what i forgot to add is i love the sport of boxing. So from time to time i will sneak in boxing to my page ( only on big super fights!).

If you are a boxing fan like myself, this weekend (May 5, 2007) will be the Mega fight between De La Hoya and Mayweather Live on Pay Per View ( i sound like a commercial). This could either be an exciting fight or a one sided fight depending on Mayweather's tactic. If Mayweather goes after De La Hoya then we will see a slugfest between a power puncher and a slick/quick Mayweather. However, if Mayweather decide to revert to his original style of punching and moving around the ring, De La Hoya will have a hard time catching him with good punches...he's just too quick.

De La Hoya could end up following Mayweather for the entire 12 rounds and ending up losing the fight to his opponent by points. Let's face it Mayweather is super quick with a good counter punch but De La Hoya has the edge on power punch and size. Remember, Mayweather is moving up to the junior middleweight division, a far cry from the Featherweight class from which he started his boxing career. If De La Hoya is able to connect with good body punches during the early rounds, he might have a chance of slowing down Mayweather at the critical rounds of 9,10,11 and 12 rounds.

So who do you think will win, the six-division champion Oscar De La Hoya versus the unbeaten four-division champion Floyd Mayweather?

The oddmakers make Floyd Mayweather a 2-1 favorate to win the fight....do you agree?

My prediction: Floyd will win by decision ( a close decision)...i hope i'm wrong because i really like De La Hoya.
